2 Notre Dame Students Killed, 1 Injured, After Being Hit by Car Near Campus: 'So Shattering'

Two University of Notre Dame students were killed over the weekend after being struck by a vehicle just a mile away from their Indiana campus, according to officials.

In a press release, the university confirmed the fatal incident and identified the victims as Valeria Espinel and Olivia Lara Rojas, who were both 19-year-old first-year students.

A third student, who was a sophomore — identified by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office (SJCPO) as 19-year-old Eduardo Jose Elias Calderon — was also struck by the vehicle but is currently hospitalized, according to the university.

"On behalf of the entire Notre Dame community, I express our deepest condolences and pray that our students’ families and friends may find God’s grace and solace after so shattering a loss," University of Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins said in a statement. "We also pray for a full recovery of our student who remains hospitalized as a result of the accident."

According to a press release from the SJCPO, the incident unfolded on Saturday morning just after 4 a.m. local time. Authorities said a Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling southbound on Ironwood Road when it struck three individuals.

According to The South Bend Tribune, the road that the individuals were walking on does not have sidewalks and is near an apartment complex where many Notre Dame upperclassmen and graduate students live.

After hitting the trio, the minivan made a "sharp left," collided with a house on the 54000 block of Ironwood Road and came to a stop against the front of the residence, the SJCPO's press release stated.

The owner of the house told The Tribune that he was sleeping at the time of the crash but felt the car come through his bedroom wall.

"I heard the boom, felt the house shake and heard stuff fall off the wall," said the man, who did not want to disclose his identity, adding that he called 911 and then went outside to see what had occurred.

Meanwhile, as the victims were lying in the roadway, SJCPO authorities said a second vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, was traveling southbound on Ironwood Road and ended up striking Espinel again.

Both female victims — Rojas of Bolivia and Espinel of Ecuador — were pronounced dead at the scene, while Calderon of the Dominican Republic was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he remains in critical condition, according to police.

As for the drivers, the SJCPO said the Sienna was being operated by Justin Cavallo of South Bend. Cavallo, 25, suffered minor injuries but remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

He also had a passenger inside the vehicle, whom police identified as Rafik Tannir of South Bend. Tannir, 24, was uninjured in the incident.

The driver of the Impala, Darlene Holden of South Bend, also did not suffer any injuries. Holden, 54, also remained at the scene of the accident, according to police.

"The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated, per protocol, to handle the investigation," the SJCPO wrote. "This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and toxicology results are pending. We will release further information to the public as we are able to do so."

Added the St. Joseph's County Police Department in a Facebook post: "Sheriff and the entire County Police Department send their condolences to the entire University of Notre Dame family and the families of the students involved in this tragedy. We also thank and pray for our SJCPD officers and all the other first responders whom made the scene to help this morning."

In the wake of the tragedy, the University of Notre Dame announced they would be offering counseling and campus ministry support to students, as well as a campus-wide prayer service on Saturday evening.

"Please wear a mask and practice physical distancing as we come together in prayer. A procession to the Grotto will follow the prayer service," the university wrote in an Instagram post. "We also encourage students to utilize the @uccnd and @ndministry as resources during this very difficult time."

‘Batwoman’ Unveils First Look at Javicia Leslie in the New Batsuit

The CW has released two first-look images for the “Batwoman” suit redesign based around actress Javicia Leslie’s character, Ryan Wilder.

The outfit will be featured starting in Season 2, episode 3, and is the first original design for the new Batwoman, as Leslie takes over the mantle from Ruby Rose, who led the show during its first season. Leslie is the first Black woman to portray a live-action version of the superhero on TV or film.

“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment,” Leslie said in a statement. “I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

The new outfit was conceptualized by Maya Mani and created by Ocean Drive Leather, while Janice Workman crafted the wig and Cory Roberts styled the makeup. Mani said the design is meant to highlight Leslie’s physical athleticism and offer a fresh take for the new character.

The black and red outfit features various new differences, but most notably, a new wig. Gone is the straight red hair, as the new design swaps in curly hair with red streaks. Also new to the character are the red gauntlets and a new belt with the bat logo. The laser-etched suit has other differences as well, visible in the first looks offered by the CW.

The suit embodies Ryan’s shift from using the Batwoman persona for personal gain to discovering the importance of the superhero as a symbol to Gotham City, said executive producer Caroline Dries in a press release. As she’s not the same person as Kate Kane (Rose), the woman who donned the suit before her, changes must be made to reflect her own style.

“As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively,” said Dries. “This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’”

Alisson reveals God and wanting to prove Liverpool medical staff wrong helped him come back from injury early

ALISSON has revealed his mission to prove Liverpool’s medical staff wrong after being told he could be sidelined for six weeks.

The Brazilian keeper also admitted it was tough missing Liverpool’s 7-2 thrashing against Aston Villa after suffering a shoulder injury ahead of the clash.

Alisson gave Liverpool a boost when returning for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United, just three weeks after picking up the problem.

Preparing for the home Champions League clash with FC Midtjylland, he said: “It is good to be back. I am really happy.

"As soon as the doctor said four to six weeks, I said ‘no doc, we go to two or three weeks maximum.’ Then I went for it.

“I pray a lot. I really do. Also, I had a lot of treatment. Everyday I was at the club for five or six hours and I was working with the fitness department.

“After two weeks, I was brought together with the goalie coach, doing catching but not diving. After two-and-half weeks, I started to dive.

"Three days later, I started with hard goal kicks and full diving and on Friday, I gave the boss the green light that I could play.

“I am glad it was only three weeks. Not being involved in every game, like the Atletico match last season or the Villa game, is always hard.

"As a player, you want to be out there helping the team”

Alisson admitted it will be difficult playing without defender Virgil van Dijk who has a long-term ACL injury.

Fabinho will once again deputise against the Danes.

The Anfield number one said: “Fabinho is a fantastic player but we will miss Virgil a lot. We cannot deny that.”

Apart from van Dijk, Liverpool will once again be without the injured Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oscar Isaac Is Reportedly Marvel's Moon Knight in Disney+ Series

Marvel Studios is rounding out its roster of Disney+ superheroes, as Oscar Isaac is reportedly “in negotiations” to lead the upcoming Moon Knight series, according to multiplereports.

Moon Knight is Marc Spector, a mercenary who may or may not be infused with powers from Khonshu the Moon God after being left for dead in the Egyptian desert. While this would mark Isaac’s official entrée into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he previously starred as the titular big bad in Fox’s X-Men Apocalypse.

Isaac’s casting would complete the title roles for Marvel’s announced Disney+ series, following reports that Tatiana Maslany will headline She-Hulk and newcomer Iman Vellani will star in Ms. Marvel. (Hailee Steinfeld, meanwhile, is rumored to be playing the new Hawkeye.)

The downside to Isaac’s chef’s kiss casting is that Oliver Jackson-Cohen — who was the fan cast-favorite for the role — will not be donning Moon Knight’s cape and cowl. Perhaps he could play Spector’s BFF, Frenchie, instead?

Moon Knight was first announced by Kevin Feige during 2019’s D23 Expo, with the Marvel boss teasing it as “a new action-adventure series” and “something very unique and exciting for us,” while head writer Jeremy Slater (Netflix’s Umbrella Academy) promises “one hell of a ride.”

Marvel’s Disney+ universe will kick off with WandaVision later this year, followed by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the Tom Hiddleston-starring Loki in 2021.

Glass Entertainment Group Options Adam Cohen’s Book ‘Supreme Inequality’ For TV Adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: Glass Entertainment Group, the Emmy-winning production company behind such programs as Pope: The Most Powerful Man In History, has secured rights to bestselling author Adam Cohen’s book Supreme Inequality: The Supreme Court’s 50-Year Battle for a More Unjust America, to adapt into a television docuseries.

Per the book’s synopsis, Supreme Inequality surveys the most significant Supreme Court rulings since the Nixon era and exposes how rarely the Court has veered away from its agenda of promoting inequality. Many of the greatest successes of the Warren Court of the 1950s and 1960s, in areas such as school desegregation, voting rights, and protecting workers, have been abandoned in favor of rulings that protect corporations and privileged Americans, who tend to be white, wealthy, and powerful. As the nation comes to grips with new Trump-appointed justices, Cohen proves that the modern Court has been one of the leading forces behind the nation’s soaring level of economic inequality, and that an institution revered as a source of fairness has been systematically making America less fair.

The television adaptation will closely follow the narrative course of the book, which is based on Cohen’s years of research.

GEG’s Nancy Glass and Eric Neuhaus will executive produce, along with Cohen.

“The work of Adam Cohen is timely, relevant and essential at this moment in history,” said Nancy Glass, CEO of GEG. “We are very excited about the opportunity to bring this important book to life.”

“Americans have been badly misled about the Supreme Court,” added Cohen. “For the past 50 years, it has not been a champion of the disadvantaged – it has consistently ruled in favor of corporations and rich people, and against the poor and the working class. This myth-busting documentary is badly needed – particularly now that Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Court’s most prominent champion of the disadvantaged, is gone. Americans are entitled to the truth about one of the nation’s most important – and, at times, dangerous – institutions.”

Cohen is a leading authority on the Supreme Court, having covered the topic for The New York Times editorial page for eight years, and before that for Time magazine. His book Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and the Sterilization of Carrie Buck, is being adapted into a film starring and executive produced by Dakota Johnson. Cohen is a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review.

The acquisition is part of a strategy of developing unique IP for GEG, which also is behind the upcoming Lincoln: An American President on CNN. Most recently, the company launched Balthazar Entertainment with executive producer and TV personality Brian Balthazar (Flip or Flop) as well as the hit Apple podcast Dating Diaries: Quarantine Confessions. GEG also producing series including The Vet Life (Animal Planet), Heartland Vets: DVM (NatGeo Wild), Queen of Stylz (snapchat), Frozen in Time (HGTV), as well as unannounced projects for HGTV, Oxygen, MTV, Magnolia, and HLN.

New accuser claims Harvey Weinstein forced her to perform sex act in mid 90s

Fox News Flash top entertainment headlines for October 26

Fox News Flash top entertainment and celebrity headlines are here. Check out what’s clicking today in entertainment.

A new accuser has stepped forward and filed a complaint against convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein.

According to the Daily News, a 61-year-old woman filed a complaint with the NYPD Special Victims Division alleging that in 1995 or 1996, while at a Manhattan nightclub with Weinstein, he forced her to perform oral sex on him.

Detectives are now investigating the accusation, according to sources. The alleged assault is considered a first-degree criminal sexual act and has no statute of limitations on prosecution. A rep for Weinstein did not immediately return Fox News' request for comment.

Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year sentence in New York for his conviction on third-degree rape and forcible sexual assault of two women. He was sentenced in February and is in the Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, N.Y., east of Buffalo.

On Oct. 2, the disgraced movie producer was hit with six new counts of forcible sexual assault, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced at the time.

The new charges stem from alleged incidents involving two women and adds three felony counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, the District Attorney's Office said.

Two of the counts include an alleged incident between September 2004 and September 2005 in which Weinstein allegedly raped a woman at a hotel in Beverly Hills, according to the amended case file.

The amended criminal complaint also accuses Weinstein of allegedly raping another woman on two separate occasions in November 2009 and November 2010 at a hotel in Beverly Hills.

Weinstein now stands charged with four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual battery by restraint, and one count of sexual penetration by use of force. The counts involve five women and stem from crimes that allegedly spanned from 2004 to 2013, the District Attorney's Office said in the amended case file.

If convicted as charged, the 68-year-old faces up to 140 years in prison.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual assault.

Fox News’ Julius Young contributed to this report.
